Get Out There!

Get Out There! is a new sister project to Inside Out for adults with mild learning disabilities that will cater for people the original project can’t stretch to include.  This group of people at the top of the ability scale is often underrepresented by service provision of this kind and the first session we started up was full by the time the second week commenced.

The main aim of it is to provide an opportunity for eight to ten people per session to develop essential life skills through practical activities, team work and group led initiatives in a relaxed but focussed environment. The project will be ongoing with plenty of scope for expansion to other week days and will be fully financially self sufficient from the other projects.

The approach is to use monthly themes around which a host of other relevant subtopics can be tackled. These are based on the particular strengths and weaknesses of the group members but are to include citizenship, money management, time management, health and well being, cultural awareness and independent living. A single session will incorporate as many different facets of learning as is appropriate or manageable and focus on the things the group members will find most useful and achievable.

Unlike accredited courses, the tools used can be fully customer focussed and adapted to each individual group. Each group dynamic can also be used to its full advantage as members are encouraged to use their individual skills to assist others towards a collective goal and gain confidence by leadership.

The overall aim is to increase members confidence to put themselves out there into the world and find ways to fulfil their potential both in living more independently and developing their skills.
