React Sessions
Art (Monday a.m. and Tuesday a.m.)
Our aim in this art session is to create a calm and relaxing environment where clients can participate in a range of creative activities. We try and let the client achieve the work themselves wherever possible without staff taking over and doing it for them. Although it is tempting when it looks like someone is struggling it is important not to as if we do things for them it may be preventing them from practicing and developing skills. Art is a powerful tool for relaxation and calming people down. It is also a therapeutic and sensory tool as different materials can be used in a tactile way.
Music and Sensory (Monday p.m. and Tuesday a.m.)
The main aim of this session is to develop trust and build relationships with individuals.
We aim to connect to people with sensory impairments through music and sensory stimulation.
We make positive connections to people using percussion instruments, poetry, songs, rhymes, storytelling, chanting and music and movement which brings focus and harmony to the group. We value group member’s vocal responses and movement using intensive interaction techniques.
Using the Jabadao approach we use props such as parachutes, soft balls, silky colourful scarves and ribbon sticks for their visual and tactile qualities and to encourage movement and self expression.
Above all we allow each person to explore the sensory space at their own pace and create a welcoming environment that enables people to feel comfortable and secure.
Sensory Session (Wednesday a.m. and p.m.)
The sensory room is a place where you can explore and develop senses and skills. It allows people to interact with equipment and other members of the group. Equipment can be used like lighting, smells or sounds. The client is given their own space to have a change from their normal routine. It can be a calm place or a more up tempo session; audio and visual aids are introduced to create a mood. Ideally, all distractions are removed and sensory development can be introduced. Sensory stimulation increases awareness and positive behaviours in individuals; this benefits learning and interaction.
Music (Tuesday a.m. and Thursday a.m.)
The aim of the music sessions is to provide a calm and friendly environment. Clients are welcomed upon their arrival and staff find a comfortable place for them to be.
We try to create different atmospheres for our clients to enjoy. Part of the session may be lively with energetic music played with drumming, dancing and makaton songs.
This has to be varied though as if the session is lively all the way through it may become too much for the clients to cope with as some people are sensitive to noise.
Clients are encouraged to join in as much as possible with singing, dancing and playing instruments
Sport (Thursday p.m.)
This session, despite its title is not about traditional sport but about encouraging people to move in their own way, at their level of ability and at their own pace. Much of the equipment is adapted for people with physical difficulties.
Games and activities have been developed to help people to move in ways they may never normally move in and helps general awareness of the body, balance and movement. Team games are never competitive but cooperative, building relationships through drama games and shared experiences.
Cookery (Thursday p.m.)
This session is aimed at clients who enjoy hands on activity preparing and cooking food.
Our aim is to encourage clients to participate in a cookery session allowing them to be involved in something that is not always available in the home.
The session involves supporting clients through the process of weighing ingredients, mixing, rolling out and baking through to tasting the finished product. They are kept aware of the importance of hygiene in the kitchen at all times.
Soft Play (Friday a.m.)
The aim of this session is to provide people with an environment where they can express themselves through free play, movement, touch stimuli, exploration and of course fun.
The room is set up with mats, balls, fabric and other soft play equipment. It is all laid out in a way that looks appealing to users, making them want to pick it up and experiment. The blinds are lowered, calming music is played and mats are placed away from the main area for people who wish to spend some time alone.
More energetic games are usually played at the start of the session and after a drink quieter time is more relevant. Then relaxation is encouraged with time for reflection. Overall it is most important to be guided by peoples responses.
Music and Movement (Friday p.m.)
The aim of this session is to use the medium of music in the most creative way possible and to promote spontaneous movement. Games, props, live music, themes, karaoke, CD’s and poetry are used to create an inventive atmosphere. The session begins with the welcome song and can take any direction, calm or energetic. The staff team work together to involve all the people and make sure everyone gets the most out of the session.
